Cup Profile. Fine, pleasant, sweetish coffee with a very smooth body and medium acidity.
Bordering Tanzania, in the northeastern part of Burundi, is the Muyinga coffee region. It has a temperate climate with volcanic soils, 1300 mm of rainfall per year and an average altitude of 1800 metres above sea level, which makes it ideal for coffee growing. Harvesting takes place from April to July. Coffee cultivation in Burundi began in the 1930s, when the Belgians brought Arabica coffee plants with them. Today, more than 800 000 Burundian families are engaged in coffee growing. These small farmers grow on average 50-250 bushes, and most farms also grow other crops. Some 25 million coffee plants, mostly of the bourbon variety, are grown on more than 60 000 hectares. A small amount of robusta is produced, but the majority is arabica.
